Croissant Dishcrawl Montreal
This past Saturday, over 55 foodies set a new Dishcrawl attendance record when they joined our Croissant themed Montreal event. The ‘city’s best’ format was the brainchild of one of our local Machmakers, BaoPhac Do and was a slight departure from our standard restaurant-hopping design. We were confident of success, as we knew that between the two of us we had many years of thoughtful buttery research going into our picks. Although the traditional walking format was desired, the erratic weather made the decision to host inside an easy one, after all nobody likes a soggy cold croissant. Le Maitre Chocolatier was ready to assist us in a pinch and their quaint tearoom made the perfect venue for our event.
The dischrawl attendees were punctual as always and the event began just as stomachs started to growl. Guests were provided with ballots and asked to guess which bakery they thought each croissant came from, as there would be a special prize at the end for the person with the most correct answers.
First up were three delicious treats from bakery Kouign Amann. Soft almond croissants with just the right balance of sweet and crisp paved the way for the most perfectly golden traditional butter croissants. Nicolas, Kouign Amann’s owner and baker also created a mini version of his chocolate breads especially for the event.
Following, the crowd was presented with their first multi-flavored selection of the day. Autour d’un Pain’s chocolate almond croissants, a fantastic mix of two traditional flavors that causes people to stop in their tracks and say, “why didn’t I think of that!”
With our journey having evolved beyond the traditional croissant format, we pressed on to two very special treats. Fous Dessert’s appropriately named King Kong and Belle Helene circulated the room, their complex flavours simply demanding attention. The first was a combination of chocolate and banana and the second chocolate with pear.
Not to stray too far from the path, dishes filled with Le Paltoquet’s time-honored plain croissants made the rounds. These crisp and flaky treasures were perfection.
We continued on with Duc de Lorraine’s famous amandines. Known for some of the best croissants in the city, this large crescent shaped almond delight simply melts in your mouth.
As a bonus, we presented our Dishcrawlers with one last treat, cornetti from La Cornetteria. Smooth ricotta cream filled these Italian style croissants making for a sweet finishing touch to our event.
Not to overlook the fact that we were at one of the finest chocolatiers in the city, a gorgeous plate of chocolates was presented to our guests. They were filled with elegant flavours ranging from coffee, peanut, lemon, and orange. They were glorious and heavenly.
Audrey D. was the lucky winner of our “where is the croissant from” game and received a box of chocolates from Le Maitre Chocolatier. I’m sure she’s enjoying them!
So which croissant did our guests choose as their favourite?
Kouign Amann’s almond croissants were rated tops!
