Perfect Suggestions ~ Montreal Restaurant of the Week
I love when people give me restaurant suggestions. I’m always game for trying something new, and when the source is reliable, I can’t wait to get there.
That’s how I met Pizzeria Magpie. This quaint restaurant was filled with character, a lovely wood fired oven and an impressive walk-in fridge. The more I looked around, the more interesting accents I found (love the Johnny Cash machine).
The food was an absolute delight!
A gorgeous Charcuterie platter presented on a cutting block was set down before us. Just the sight of delicious pieces of smoked pork tenderloin, thinly sliced Genoa salami (with just the right amount of kick) and a first but definitely not a last for me, blue cheese sausage, made our mouths instantly water. Complimented with some plump olives, crunchy pickles, and a sharp cube of pecorino, we were all set to dig in, but not without the fabulous homemade bread that accompanied this dish. It was so good that we asked for seconds. The combination of fresh warm bread and Montreal made cured meats was incredible.
Then came the pizza. In a move that was totally uncharacteristic for me, I ordered the meatballs with mushrooms option. I was told how popular this dish was so I went with it. It was scrumptious. Tender and savory meatballs, chunky mushrooms, soft melted cheese, tasty tomato sauce and lovely crust made a magnificent experience.
I stole a slice of the caramelized onion pizza with black olives and rich creamy ricotta from my dining buddy and was impressed. The play between sweet onions and savory flavours is always a favourite and the soft melted cheese with wonderful herbs really was perfect.
A restaurant reviewer’s gotta do, what a restaurant reviewer’s gotta do, so we ordered dessert (not much arm twisting needed). Magpie’s warm double chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream was heavenly. The sheen of its top crust hid a fantastically fudgy experience. Oh yes, it was that good, but next time I’m trying their homemade cookies that are so popular they ran out by the time I got there!
As always, I can eat…
