Soul Food for a Cold Day ~ Montreal Restaurant of the Week
Was that a snowflake that just hit the windshield? A deep sigh escapes me. Yup, there’s another one. As our short-lived summer and even shorter fall season come to an end, my love hate relationship with winter begins its annual dance. Sure I can sit here and complain about the cold, or the market being closed, but truthfully when it comes to food, there is one major plus to the winter season and that’s comfort food. Not the quick snack type of comfort food you grab when you have a bad day, but the hearty, thick, stick to your ribs and warm up your soul, kind of food that your body just doesn’t crave in the summertime.
So Mother Nature, I see your first snowflakes and I raise you a trip to Alpenhaus! This Swiss restaurant, run by Derrek Gangasingh has been around forever and has simply perfected the traditional forms of delicious fondue.
Straight from the car and through the door we quickly cuddled up in a booth on the casual side of the restaurant. I was happy and eager as gorgeous lobster bisque was placed in front of me. Its rich and intense flavours were soothing and every spoonful of the smooth and velvety soup was pure bliss.
Still licking my lips, I greeted the Cheese fondue. Hello creamy and luscious, where have you been all summer? The meeting of Emmental, Raclette and Gruyere cheeses created fondue perfection. This dish was scrumptious as every last morsel of bread was used to scoop up all that edible pleasure.
I felt like an artist as what looked like a painter’s palette was set down for the meat portion of this comfort food extravaganza. Homemade tartar, teriyaki, garlic, curry and mango sauces were ready for me to create a masterpiece and worked so well with the tender beef. With great conversation, a glass of wine and the sound of food sizzling as it cooks, every bite is enjoyable.
Our fondue journey would simply not be complete without dessert. The delectable chocolate fondue was so inviting and the sweet fragrances filled the air. The accents of fresh fruits were a perfect vehicle to carry the ‘food of the Gods’ to my mouth. Decadent and smooth, I think I could find happiness just with a pot of melted chocolate and a spoon.
As always, I can eat…
